Georges Braque - Works from the graphic oeuvre
Georges Braque
Georges Braque's graphic oeuvre is determined by a stunning modernity. In his small body of graphic works, he focused on selected motifs. Deeply inspired by mythology, he found to figurative scenes, especially showing horses and antique carriages. A further important sujet was the still life, especially the tea cans in combination with apples or lemons. It is pure joy to realize how the things are "coming to life" in these works. Braque found the most variants and the highest grade of abstraction in the main motif of his late work: the flight of birds. He said that the bird flying high in the sky is the real still life. Braque used the printing techniques in a virtuoso manner, what pushed boundaries and makes these lithographs, woodcuts and etchings so vivid and modern.

Georges Braque (Argenteuil 1882–1963 Paris) is one of the great and important artists of the twentieth century and left behind an impressive oeuvre. As a contemporary and companion of Pablo Picasso, he is regarded together with him as the co-creator of Cubism and thus as a pioneer of modernism. His work beyond Cubism was particularly influential in the 1950s and ’60s. In addition to his paintings, a number of outstanding prints are among the highlights of his work. From the very beginning, he devoted his attention and passion to his graphic oeuvre and explored the artistic possibilities of printmaking techniques.
